Welcome and Announcements John Strawbridge, Lay Leader

Choral Introit “How Blessed Are They Who Trust In Christ ” (Genevan Psalter)

How blessed are they who trust in Christ

When we and those we love must part;

We yield them up, for go they must,

But do not lose them from our heart.

Call to Worship

L: We are gathered to give witness to the enduring realities of life.

P: We have come to affirm that life is a gift, that the gift is good, and that it comes from God.

L: We are gathered to renew our hope in Jesus Christ, as we travel life’s long journey.

P: We find God in the paths of our present and our past, but we also trust in God’s love in our future.

L: The same God guides us all the way, every day of our lives, and beyond life.

P: Let us praise God with our whole hearts, and entrust our lives to God’s hands. Amen.

Opening Hymn “Eternal Father Strong to Save” TFWS 2191 Vs. 1, 2 & 4

1. Eternal Father, strong to save, whose arm has bound the restless wave
who bids the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep;
O hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea.

2. O Savior, whose almighty word the wind and waves submissive heard
who walked upon the foaming deep, and calm amid the rage did sleep;
O hear us when we cry to thee, for those in peril on the sea.

4. O Trinity of love and power, all travelers guard in danger’s hour
from rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them where-so-e’er they go;
thus evermore shall rise to thee, glad praise from air and land and sea.

Old Testament Lesson Isaiah 12:2-6 NIV

2 Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid.
The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.”
3 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.4 In that day you will say:

“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done,
and proclaim that his name is exalted. 5 Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. 6 Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”

Choral Response “Spirit Song” UMH 347 Vs. 1

Oh, let the Son of God enfold you with his Spirit and his love;

Let him fill your heart and satisfy your soul
Oh, let him have the things that hold you, and his Spirit, like a dove,

Will descend upon your life and make you whole.

Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs.
Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs.

Gospel Lesson Luke 21:5-19 The Message

5-6 One day people were standing around talking about the Temple, remarking how beautiful it was, the splendor of its stonework and memorial gifts. Jesus said, “All this you’re admiring so much—the time is coming when every stone in that building will end up in a heap of rubble.”7 They asked him, “Teacher, when is this going to happen? What clue will we get that it’s about to take place?” 8-9 He said, “Watch out for the doomsday deceivers. Many leaders are going to show up with forged identities claiming, ‘I’m the One,’ or, ‘The end is near.’ Don’t fall for any of that. When you hear of wars and uprisings, keep your head and don’t panic. This is routine history and no sign of the end.” 10-11 He went on, “Nation will fight nation and ruler fight ruler, over and over. Huge earthquakes will occur in various places. There will be famines. You’ll think at times that the very sky is falling.12-15 “But before any of this happens, they’ll arrest you, hunt you down, and drag you to court and jail. It will go from bad to worse, dog-eat-dog, everyone at your throat because you carry my name. You’ll end up on the witness stand, called to testify. Make up your mind right now not to worry about it. I’ll give you the words and wisdom that will reduce all your accusers to stammers and stutters.16-19 “You’ll even be turned in by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. Some of you will be killed. There’s no telling who will hate you because of me. Even so, every detail of your body and soul—even the hairs of your head!—is in my care; nothing of you will be lost. Staying with it—that’s what is required. Stay with it to the end. You won’t be sorry; you’ll be saved.

Invitation to Offering

On-Line giving

Offertory “ Lead Me, Lord” (Wesley)

Lead me, Lord, lead me in Thy righteousness; make Thy way plain before my face. For it is Thou, Lord, only, that makes me dwell in safety.

Offering Prayer (All)

We offer these gifts and our lives to be blessed by you, O God. We pray that they may be used as building blocks of your kingdom. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen

Closing Hymn “This Is My Song” UMH 437

1. This is my song, O God of all the nations,
A song of peace for lands afar and mine.
This is my home, the country where my heart is;
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my sacred shrine.
But other hearts in other lands are beating,
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.

2. My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine.
But other lands have sunlight too and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
O hear my song, O God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.

3. This is my prayer, O Lord of all earth’s kingdoms:
Thy kingdom come; on earth thy will be done.
Let Christ be lifted up till all shall serve him,
And hearts united learn to live as one.
O hear my prayer, thou God of all the nations;
Myself I give thee, let thy will be done.

Benediction

Now, God who cradles us in baptism’s water, sends us forth,
to drawn hope from God’s heart and offer it to others.
Now, Jesus who poured the cup of grace, sends us forth,
to bring food and shelter, love and companionship to our neighbors.
Now the Spirit who teaches us songs of peace, sends us forth,
to offer reconciliation in every broken place, to every shattered person.

Benediction Response: “May the Grace of Christ, Our Savior”(Stainer)

May the grace of Christ, our Savior,

And the Father’s boundless love,

With the Holy Spirit’s favor

Rest upon us from above. Amen.
