Organ Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

Choral Introit “God Is Here” (Taylor)

God is here! As we your people

Meet to offer praise and prayer,

May we find in fuller measure

What it is in Christ we share.

Here, as in the world around us,

All our varied skills and arts

Wait the coming of the Spirit

Into open minds and hearts.

Call to Worship

L: O God, because of the faithful witness of your people down through the generations the story of your gracious love and its sovereign power has been given to us.  We are gathered together because we have heard the call to follow Jesus,

P: O Lord of grace and life and hope, help us to take the next step on our journey.

L: For when we look into ourselves and look back on our past, we sometimes are overwhelmed by the failure and weakness we find, and we are gripped by fear and doubt.

P: But when we offer up our fearful doubt to Jesus, we are grasped and lifted up–again and again and again.

L.: Yet, if we journeyed alone under our own strength, we certainly would be swallowed by the wilderness. We would choose our our way instead of being led by God in the way of life.

P: But we are not alone. For Jesus, the Lord of all life, has promised that where two or more gather in his name, there he will be in their midst.

L: Where God is present with God’s people, there mercy, kindness, love, and understanding flow like a refreshing stream.  Lord, cast out our fears so that our hearts may be open to your love and to one another in  Jesus Name

Opening Hymn The Battle Hymn of the Republic UMH 717 Vs 1,3 and 4

1. Mine  eyes have seen the glory of the coming  of the Lord;

he is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;

he hath loosed the fateful  lightning of his terrible swift sword; His Truth is marching on

(Refrain) Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah!  Glory, glory, hallelujah! His Truth is marching on!

3. He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;

he is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment seat;

O be swift, my soul , to answer him; be jubilant my feet!

Our God is marching on.

4. In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,

with a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me;

as he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,

while God is marching on.

A Reading from  Psalm 2 (New Revised Standard Version)

1 Why do the nations conspire, and the peoples plot in vain?

2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and his anointed, saying,

3 “Let us burst their bonds asunder and cast their cords from us.”

4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the LORD has them in derision.

5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying,

6 “I have set my king on Zion, my holy hill.”

7 I will tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have begotten you.

8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, the ends of the earth your possession.

9 You shall break them with a rod of iron, and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”

10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.

11 Serve the LORD with fear, with trembling

12 kiss his feet, or he will be angry, and you will perish in the way;  for his wrath is easily kindled.

Happy are all those who take refuge in him.

This is the Word of the Lord.  Thanks be to God!

The Gospel Lesson:  Luke 12: 49-56  New Revised Standard Version

49 “I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!

50 I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed!

51 Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the Earth?  No, I tell you, but rather division!

52 From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three;

53 they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

54 He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘It is going to rain’; and so it does.

55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat’; and it happens.

56 You hypocrites!  You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

Invitation to Offering

Offertory “As Pants the Hart” (Methodist Gallery Hymn, c. 1805)

As pants the hart for cooling streams

When wounded in the chase,

So longs my soul, O God, for Thee,

And Thy refreshing grace.

For thee, my God, the living God,

My thirsty soul doth pine:

O when shall I behold Thy face,

Thou majesty divine?

Why restless, why cast down, my soul?

Hope still, and thou shalt sing

The praise of him who is thy God,

Thy health’s eternal spring.

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,

The God whom we adore,

Be glory, as it was, is now,

And shall be evermore.

Offering Prayer (All)

We celebrate the opportunity to share what we have with those who have needs. Bless these gifts, O God, and our lives as we offer them as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. He who loved us and gave himself up for us invites us to live in love. May your Spirit strengthen us to witness to his love in all we do and say. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Closing Hymn “O Young and Fearless Prophet” UMH 444

1. O Young and fearless Prophet of ancient Galilee,

thy life is still a summons to serve humanity;

to make our thoughts and actions less prone to please the crowd,

to stand with humble courage for truth with hearts un-cowed.

2. We marvel at the purpose that held thee to thy course

while ever on the hill-top before thee loomed the cross;

thy steadfast face set forward where love and duty shown,

while we betray so quickly and leave thee there alone.

3. O help us stand unswerving against war’s bloody way,

where hate and lust and falsehood hold back Christ’s holy sway;

forbid false love of country that blinds us to his call,

who lifts above the nations the unity of all.

4. Stir up in us a protest against our greed for wealth,

while others starve and hunger and plead for work and health;

where homes with little children cry out for lack of bread,

who live their years sore burdened beneath a gloomy dread.

5. O young and fearless Prophet, we need thy presence here,

amid our pride and glory to see thy face appear;

once more to hear thy challenge above our noisy day,

again to lead us forward along God’s holy way.

Benediction Response “God Be With You Till We Meet Again “(Vaughan Williams)

God be with you till we meet again;

By His counsels guide, uphold you,

With His sheep securely fold you;

God be with you till we meet again.
