Leader: The voice of the Lord is upon the waters.
People: The God of glory thunders.
Leader: Therefore ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
People: We worship the Lord in holy splendor.
(From Psalm 29)

*Hymn The God of Abraham Praise UMH 116

1. The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above; Ancient of Everlasting Days, and God of love; Jehovah, great I AM! by earth and heaven confessed; I bow and bless the sacred name forever blest.

2. The great I AM has sworn; I on this oath depend. I shall, on eagle wings up-borne, to heaven ascend. I shall behold God’s face; I shall God’s power adore, and sing the wonders of God’s grace forevermore.

3. The heavenly land I see, with peace and plenty blest; a land of sacred liberty, and endless rest. There milk and honey flow, and oil and wine abound, and trees of life forever grow with mercy crowned.

4. The God who reigns on high the great archangels sing, and “Holy, holy, holy!” cry, “Almighty King! Who was, and is, the same, and evermore shall be: Jehovah, Lord, the great I AM, we worship thee!”

Prayer for the Day (In Unison)

Everlasting God: You have revealed yourself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and ever live and reign in the perfect unity of love.  Grant that we may always hold firmly and joyfully to this faith, and, living in praise of your divine majesty, may finally be one in you; who are three persons in one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

Anthem - God Gave Us Music (Dale Wood)

All praise to God for song He gives,
For music and a hope that lives!
His sacred word is so profound,
We sing, and let the truth resound.

God gave us music, gave us voice;
Sing Alleluia and rejoice!
We lift in faith secure and strong
The sacred word through sacred song.

The word gives both the life and light,
And guides us through the shades of night,
So let the music sound His praise
As hymns bring gladness to our days.

In song let God be glorified,
For He is able to provide
The music for the singers’ art
As song He places in the heart.

All praise to God; His sacred Word
Has brought good news to all who heard.
We worship Him and sing with joy,
And instruments of praise employ.

A Time with Younger Disciples

A Reading from the Prophets – Isaiah 6:1-8                                    Sefi Abedoh, Liturgist

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

4 The pivots[a] on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7 The seraph[b] touched my mouth with it and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.” 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!”

A Reading from the Gospels – John 3:1-17                                        Sefi Abedoh, Liturgist

Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. 2 He came to Jesus[a] by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.”[b] 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.[c] 7 Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You[d] must be born from above.’[e] 8 The wind[f] blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

11 “Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you[g] do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.[h] 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.[i]

16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

17 “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Choral Affirmation of Faith: We Believe in One True God UMH 85

1. We believe in one true God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, ever-present help in need, praised by all the heavenly host; by whose mighty power alone all is made and wrought and done.

2. We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Mary’s Son, who descended from his throne and for us salvation won; by whose cross and death are we rescued from sin’s misery.

3. We confess the Holy Ghost, who from both fore’er proceeds; who upholds and comforts us in all trials, fears, and needs. Blest and Holy Trinity, praise forever be to thee!

ALL:     Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

ALL:     Give us this day our daily bread.

*Hymn – Holy God, We Praise Thy Name (verses 1-4)                                                UMH 79

1. Holy God, we praise thy name; Lord of all, we bow before thee; all on earth thy scepter claim; all in heaven above adore thee. Infinite thy vast domain; everlasting is thy reign.

2. Hark, the glad celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising; cherubim and seraphim, in unceasing chorus praising, fill the heavens with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy Lord.

3. Lo! the apostolic train joins thy sacred name to hallow; prophets swell the glad refrain, and the white-robed martyrs follow. And from morn to set of sun, through the church the song goes on.

4. Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit: three we name thee, though in essence only one; undivided God we claim thee, and adoring bend the knee while we own the mystery.

The Offering of Gifts & Tithes

Offertory AnthemWhen, Dearest Lord, When Shall It Be? (Jane Marshall)

When, dearest Lord, when shall it be
That I shall find my all in Thee;
The fullness of Thy promise prove,
The seal of Thy eternal love.

Ah! Wherefore did I ever doubt?
Thou wilt in no wise cast me out,
A helpless soul that comes to Thee
With only sin and misery.

Lord, I am sick: my sickness cure;
I want: do thou enrich the poor;
Under Thy mighty hand I stoop,
O lift the abject sinner up.

Lord, I am blind: be Thou my sight;
Lord, I am weak: be Thou my might;
A helper of the helpless be,
And let me find my all in Thee.

*Presentation of Offering – Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow UMH 95

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, yet heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*Hymn – Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty UMH 64

1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

2. Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

3. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, through the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love and purity.

4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

*Dismissal with Blessing

Leader: Go forth in peace, and be of good courage;
People: We will go forth, holding fast to what is good, and rejoicing in the Father and in the Son and in the Holy Spirit.
Minister: The Lord bless you and keep you: The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you: The Lord lift up the light of his countenance upon you, and give you peace.
All: Amen.
