Time of Morning Prayer

Prayer Song – Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus Hymnal 349

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, (wonderful face), and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.

Pastoral Prayer

Lord’s Prayer: (You may pray either version printed below or another that you know.)

Methodist Version
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,

thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.  Amen.
Modern Ecumenical Version
Our God in heaven:
your holy name be honored,
your kin-dom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from the evil one.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory
are yours now and always.  Amen.

Prayer Song – Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus Hymnal 349

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, (wonderful face), and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.

* Psalm of the Day – Psalm 19 (without musical response) Hymnal 750

L: (1)     The heavens are telling the glory of God;

L:     And the firmament proclaims God’s handiwork.

ALL:     (2)     Day to day pours forth speech,

ALL:     And night to night declares knowledge.

L: (3)     There is no speech, nor are there words;

L:     Their voice is not heard;

ALL:     (4)     Yet their voice goes out through all the earth,

ALL:     And their words to the end of the world.

L:     In them God has set a tent for the sun,

L: (5)     Which comes forth like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,

L:     And runs its course with joy like a strong man.

ALL:     (6)     Its rising is from the end of the heavens,

ALL:     And its circuit to the end of them;

ALL:     And there is nothing hid from its heat.

L: (7)     The law of the Lord is perfect,

L:     Reviving the soul;

ALL:     The testimony of the Lord is sure,

ALL:     Making wise the simple;

L: (8)     The precepts of the Lord are right,

L:     Rejoicing the heart;

ALL:     The commandment of the Lord is pure,

ALL:     Enlightening the eyes;

L: (9)     The fear of the Lord is clean,

L:     Enduring for ever;

ALL:     The ordinances of the Lord are true,

ALL:     And righteous altogether.

L: (10)     More to be desired are they than gold,

L:     Even much fine gold;

ALL:     Sweeter also than honey

ALL:     And drippings of the honeycomb.

L: (11)     Moreover by them is your servant warned;

L:     In keeping them there is great reward.

ALL:     (12)     But who can understand one’s own errors?

ALL:     Clear me from hidden faults.

L: (13)     Also keep your servant from the insolent;

L:     Let them not have dominion over me!

ALL:     Then I shall be blameless,

ALL:     And innocent of great transgression.

ALL:     (14)     Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

ALL:     Be acceptable in your sight,

ALL:     O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

* SongHow Great Thou Art Hymnal 77

1. O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder consider all the [worlds] thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the [rolling] thunder, thy power throughout the universe displayed. Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee; how great thou art, how great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee; how great thou art, how great thou art!

2. When through the woods and forest glades I wander, and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur and hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze; Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee; how great thou art, how great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee; how great thou art, how great thou art!

3. And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in; that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, he bled and died to take away my sin; Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee; how great thou art, how great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee; how great thou art, how great thou art!

4. When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart. Then I shall bow in humble adoration, and there proclaim, my God, how great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee; how great thou art, how great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee; how great thou art, how great thou art!

Pastor’s Time with Young Disciples Rev. Dr. Patricia L. Sebring

Scripture Reading – John 2:13-22                                                           Maria Allen, Liturgist

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, “Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” The Jews then said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Special MusicMy Song Is Love Unknown (Lani Smith)                                                 Choir

My song is love unknown,
My Savior’s love to me,
Love to loveless shown,
That they might lovely be.
O, who am I, that for my sake
My Lord Should take
Frail flesh and die?

Christ came from Heaven’s throne,
Salvation to bestow,
But people scorned and none
The longed-for Christ would know.
But O, my friend indeed
Who at my need
His life did spend!

Here might I stay and sing-
- No story so divine!
Never was love, dear King,
Never was grief like Thine.
This is my Friend,
In Whose sweet praise
I all my days
Could gladly spend!

Love so amazing, so divine.

* Song – Prayer of Confession Hymnal 892

ALL:     Our heavenly Father,

ALL:     Who by thy love hast made us,

ALL:     And through thy love hast kept us,

ALL:     And in thy love wouldst make us perfect:

ALL:     We humbly confess that we have not loved thee

ALL:     With all our heart and soul and mind and strength,

ALL:     And that we have not loved one another

ALL:     As Christ hath loved us.

ALL:     Thy life is within our souls,

ALL:     But our selfishness hath hindered thee.

ALL:     We have not lived by faith.

ALL:     We have resisted thy Spirit.

ALL:     We have neglected thine inspirations.

ALL:     Forgive what we have been;

ALL:     Help us to amend what we are;

ALL:     And in thy Spirit direct what we shall be;

ALL:     That thou mayest come into the full glory of thy creation,

ALL:     In us and in all the people;

ALL:     Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All pray in silence.

L: The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance,

L: That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

L: If any one sins, we have an advocate with the Father,

L: Jesus Christ the righteous;

L: And he is the expiation for our sins,

L: And not for ours only

L: But also for the sins of the whole world.

ALL:     Thanks be to God.

Glorifying God with our Gifts and Offerings

Invitation to Share in God’s Kingdom Work

Offertory – Jesus, Name Above All Names (Nadia Hearn) Choir

Storms appear, shadows come over me,
Depths of despair would claim each new day.
There, in the darkness when I’m tempted to lose my way,
I have a pilot Who knows the sea.

I call His name in each troubling hour;
Promise is mine of His saving power.
He gives the peace that calms my soul;
Safe is the harboring when I on Him call.

When the storms of life are raging, stand by me.
No other source can my refuge be.
Thou, Creator of the Heavens, and Ruler of the seas,
In the eye of the tempest, stand by me.

Trials come and trials go:
The only refuge I can know
Is in His ever-loving care;
The sovereign Master hears my prayer.

Stand by me, oh, stand by me.
No other source can my refuge be.
When the storms of life surround
And their wrath would bring me down,
Thou, Who rulest wind and water,
Thou, Who knowest all about me,

Stand by me.

Prayer of Dedication –

Active Lord, as you turned over the tables of the money changers in the temple,
overturn our worldly ways toward heavenly purposes
that even in this offering moment, we would be transformed
to give first priority to the work of your kingdom.
Bless what we give that it may become a blessing greater to others than to us.
Amen.

* Song to Present the Offering – Freely, Freely Hymnal 389

1. God forgave my sin in Jesus’ name, I’ve been born again in Jesus’ name, and in Jesus’ name I come to you, to share his love as he told me to. He said, “Freely, freely you have received, freely, freely give. Go in my name, and because you believe, others will know that I live.”

2. All power is given in Jesus’ name, in earth and heaven in Jesus’ name, and in Jesus’ name I come to you, to share his power as he told me to. He said, “Freely, freely you have received, freely, freely give. Go in my name, and because you believe, others will know that I live.”
